The TimberTech Championship Becomes the First Tournament in PGA TOUR Champions History to Achieve Zero Waste to Landfill Certification

When it comes to outdoor living, innovation, inspiration and sustainability are at the heart of all we do. The AZEK Company is the industry-leading designer and manufacturer of beautiful, low maintenance and environmentally sustainable outdoor living products, including TimberTech® decking, Versatex® and AZEK Trim® and StruXureTM pergolas. We use technology to create decking, railing, and home exterior products that look like natural wood, but is more sustainable (i.e., made from up to 90% recycled material and recyclable), longer lasting, and lower maintenance. As a company, we are deeply committed to making a lasting impact on the world by accelerating the use of recycled materials and reducing our environmental impact. Our commitment to creating a more sustainable future extends beyond the walls of our organization, which is why we committed to make the 2021 Timber Tech Championship a certified zero waste to landfill event — the first in PGA Tour Champions History.

In 2021, our team developed a comprehensive event waste management plan for the TimberTech Championship to identify streams that could be repurposed, recycled, composted, donated and/or re-used, and worked with local Boca Raton partners such as the Solid Waste Authority, Coastal Waste and Recycling and our FULL-CIRCLE Green Team of volunteers to help us achieve our Zero Waste goal.

In conjunction with our FULL-CIRCLE recycling program, which takes scrap and waste and recycles it into beautiful, low maintenance and sustainable TimberTech decking, we worked with our many partners to collect, transport, clean, compost, repurpose and/or reuse nearly every possible output from the event. In other words, we think about the FULL_CIRCLE.

From Bags to Beauty

FULL-CIRCLE Plastic Bag Collection Drive and Raffle:

Because we use recycled plastic bags to make some of our TimberTech decking collections, we asked tournament attendees to bring us their plastic grocery and shopping bags, which were later sent to our polyethylene recycling facility in Wilmington, Ohio and processed into new TimberTech decking. With approximately 5,000 bags received during tournament week, we were thrilled to see such robust attendee engagement around this collection drive.

Better Tech. Better Deck. Better Planet.

As an engineered decking material, TimberTech is a much more eco-friendly choice than traditional wood alternatives thanks to our commitment to sustainability which includes using up to 90% recycled materials, embracing sustainable manufacturing and ensuring maintenance is both safe and environmentally friendly.

From Bite to Bin:

The 2021 TimberTech Championship was held in Boca Raton, Florida at the Broken Sound Club, an industry leader on sustainability initiatives and home to Florida’s first industrial composting program. Because we had access to a food digester on-site, we sourced plant-based, compostable cutlery and had composting bins throughout the course to eliminate food waste. By using event compost, The Broken Sound Club was able to return organic matter and nutrients to the soil and grow wild flowers around the 22 beehives around the course.

Traditional Recycling:

We collected and recycled cups, plates, bottles, cans, and more at various stations throughout the event.

To receive certification, the TimberTech Championship went through a rigorous audit and assessment process, including an audit of  all waste streams, inspection of all waste receptacles and assessment of all third-party waste management companies to confirm management methods and diversion rates. Additionally, Green Circle provided recommendations for improvement based on their findings.
